10 Years ArtTour Maastricht

‘Best before…..’ : 21st till 24th of May 2009

In 2009 the 10th ArtTour will be held in Maastricht. Enjoy for four days the work of more than 150 professional visual artists from Maastricht and surroundings and from the Euregion (Aachen, Hasselt). Everybody is welcome at the open workshops, the art institutes and the breeding spots. And… it’s for Free

Open mind: the Think-Tank in a dialogue with you

In order to give the 10th ArtTour more input from the hinterland Art2Connect organizes the Think-Tank on 13 March at 17.30 pm and 3 April. At Intro in Situ everybody is welcome to discus in a transparent way about the future role of the ArtTour. The minutes of the first two gatherings  can be downloaded here (one or two) as a PDF.

Best before….2018. ArtTour as Bielenmenke?

The jubilee edition of the ArtTour is a good moment to reflect. What is our motivation? What about our aims? Although we don’t want to show ‘easy’ art, we want to stay accessible in the presentation.

Change is the only constancy

…in this instant and ready made tv-diner times. ‘Best before…’ is therefore the (self) critical title in which we challenge the artist, the policy maker and ourselves. Together we want to give form in a pro-active way to the ArtTour, to the earth and the art.
‘Best before…..a better world’. How can the ArtTour rise like a phoenix from his ashes without CO2? ‘Art is allowed to stink’ , said Peter Fabre, who wrapped up stone pillars with raw meat. Products that consume us whisper the message: Forever yours. But is art meant to be forever or does the inevitable fading of the Nachtwacht gives it its everlasting value? What role plays during art according to the cradle-to-cradle principles. And how new are these principles: many participating artists like T. Gobbele, K. König, H. Schellinx or B. Huijbers don’t know different than to work with waste products. How can the ArtTour engage itself for a better world.

Best before….Maastricht cultural capital 2018. Is Mosa Trajectum becoming a Burgundy society of spectacle?  Give the people bread and games, steal the art and call it artotainment or creative city. Is this the new hype? But the esthetic bombardment is becoming a race for our minds, with the numbing of our spirits and erosion of our sensitivity as a result. By using art as an instrument for making policies it loses its role as critical and independent watchdog. Is that why we wish a paved road to 2018?  Is the ArtTour a misplaced stone on this road or a subversive brick that is thrown of a viaduct? Or the traditional phenomenon like the Bielenmenke, which clears the road for the riflemen?
Together with the hinterland we will search a new perspective. We will formulate a vision on essence, authenticity and urgency. And ask the question: is the ArtTour non-perishable?

Or shall we put Maastricht deep in the freezer…
